40K at THIS Time of Year…
by, Wolflord Patrick

As I sit in my desk at work thinking about which project is glaring at me the most and desires my attention, I can’t help but wonder about this time a few years ago when we had the glorious Battle for Armageddon Campaign. In my opinion, this was indeed the “Golden Era” for the 3rd edition of Warhammer 40,000.
It was at this time when Games Workshop themselves made the trip across the country to run a Rogue Trader Tournament. When players started coming out in droves to represent their armies and battle for reputation. Nicknames soon spurred up for our local 40K veterans like Bug John, Land Raider Bryan, and Nurgling Chieftain. Rogue Traders became more prominent in the local game store and with a much greater turn out. The usual 40K league became more popular than ever, at one time sporting more than 40 players. Yes, it could be argued that this was the best of times indeed…
Now we are in the year 2003. The 3rd edition of 40K is still the version played, even though the game looks only vaguely like it did back then. Yet on the horizon there is talk of another Games Workshop sponsored campaign. Will this campaign spur the same excitement that the Battle for Armageddon did back in 2000? Will that same lust for battle return as it did when over 60 people got involved in the biggest “Bring-in-Battle” San Diego had ever seen? The answers to these questions are really unknown, however, there are a few of our local veteran players that are willing to do what it takes to make it that way again. It is for these players that I take my hat off. I applaud the enthusiasm and the work done by Deuce and Bug-Boy Eberwein for keeping their attention towards a dream of making San Diego the best gaming community it could possibly be. People who question their contributions need look no further than this web site itself as proof of another of their accolades.
In short, there is proof that their work is starting to pay off. It seems that not just the game of 40K, but the Games Workshop hobby itself is starting to take off again. The Seattle Grand Tournament just ended. Games Workshop’s Games Day is right around the corner at the end of next month, and there are quite a few Rogue Traders and conventions on the near horizon. Also, not to mention that the league has started up again recently and with quite a few new names on the roster. Most of this is leading me to believe that the hobby is starting to make a move toward a more active season, and that hopefully this building momentum will carry the hobby well into the next year. (Or, at least it will keep me enthused about painting for a while.)
